F*CK!!!!!...

So, the other night, I'm at dinner with Erika and Paul and I asked them, how many times in a day do you think you hear the F-word? Growing up how I did, I NEVER heard it unless it was a "bad" person or on the movies or something. Well, now, living here in the city, honestly, I hear it so much, I'm immune to it. I never even think about it really. When Mint, Rach and I went to the movies the other night we got there early and I was listening to lots of convos around me. It hit me after a few minutes how many times, in that little amount of time, that word was used. It was in almost every conversation from old people to teenagers.

It's totally cultural around here. I'm not saying that to be critical, it's just a fact. People in this city, and maybe others, but I know NYC for sure, just use this word like it's an every day word. I know for sure that my mouth has become more "potty" since moving here. It's a casualty of living here. When I go home to Jacksonville, I never EVER say those words and here, I don't think about it, they just come out. So, yes, in part of my brain, I know I'm saying them and can stop, but for whatever reason, I don't. It's not a "cool" factor either, it's just a thing. BUT, when I'm home with the units, yeah, not even an issue. Although when I was home last time, I did say something about the freaking this or that. I used freaking, but the reverend caught on real quick and we had a discussion about it! LOL, Yeah, I felt as though I had traveled back in time and I was 15 again!

So, what do you think? Is it cultural, is it all about the "cool" factor or what?

I think it is a mixture of both the cultural and cool factors. Here in small town Mississippi today, I hear the word probably 2 times a day on average. But say 3 years ago, I maybe heard it 2 times a month. I hate to say it but I also think TV and movies have played a big part in the now general use of the word.

I think you're on the right track. There's definitely the idea that dropping the F-bomb makes someone seem more "cool" or "edgy". Why, when everyone and their grandma is doing it now? If you really want to be edgy, *don't* use the word. ;)

(Yeah, like I'll ever take my own advice...)

I agree, it would be "cooler" to not do it, but in the midst of things, that never seems to cross our minds! LOL

This is simply a sign of laziness and an inability to be creative in your word choices.

Woodard, oh no you didn't! You just totally called me out. OK, how is it laziness? Trust me on this, it takes me a few seconds sometimes to chose the perfect cuss word to use, that's so not lazy! LOL

I've gotta say it's all in who you hang with...if you are around it, you may use it, if you're not, you won't. When I was 15, it was cool, it's not anymore.

I know what your saying. A couple of years ago I went to visit my older brother in Chicago. Their whole conversations are filled with various "cuss" words. It's just how they talk and it comes natural. They don't even realize it. But being from the south, the words had shock value. They actual stung our ears to hear them. Then when Smiley & I were out and about we were crossing the street with two strangers in conversion with each other. They were not mad, they were not having a heated argument, just talking normal and the conversion was f-this and f-that. To me, I don't see that point of using it. Thank God mom moved us back to Tennessee.
